Hill Country Bicycle Works has been serving the Texas hill country in 2 locations since 1995. The owners, Adam and Lisa, rode their bicycles around the world for 3 years- (30,000 miles 17 countries on 4 continents from 1992- 1995) finding the beauty of the hill country a perfect place to open a bike shop! With over 70 years of bike shop experience between them, they have a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of bicycle riding, touring, advocacy, trail building, event promotion, racing and bicycle repair. Hill Country Bicycle Works is a big city shop nestled in the small towns of Kerrville and Fredericksburg with a wide selection of bicycles and accessories, swim gear and rentals.
Experience:
Adam has been working on bikes since 1970 – he was 8 and took apart his bike in the basement so he could make it go faster. He and his buddies used to talk his older brother into taking them to the top of Mt Tamalpias in Marin County so they could bomb down the dirt roads long before mountain biking began.
In 1972 Adam got his 1st road bike and jumped into a race- he was 10.
In 1980 Adam got a fat tired bike and entered his 1st mountain bike race – he was 18.
He built both the bikes that he and his wife took around the world and kept them running on spare and fabricated parts. The four wheels only suffered two broken spokes. Adam’s attention to detail and knowledge of the newest and oldest technology in the bike industry is second to none. He’s spent over 40 years putting people on bicycles- professionally dialing in fit and function. A certified fitter in both BikeFit and Retul, he understands the mechanics of both the bike and the body to deliver a ride that is optimum for each individual, from the casual rider to the competitive racer.
Lisa came to the game a bit later, getting her first mountain bike in 1985. She was immediately hooked and two years later started working for Marin Mountain Bikes in their retail shop where she met Adam. An experienced seamstress, Lisa made all the clothes that the couple took around the world, from vortex jackets to their “townie” outfits. Adam did the bikes and she did the equipment, finding dental floss to be excellent for the repair of everything from tire sidewalls to shoes and mosquito nets.
Lisa has been working on bikes since 1987, gleaning knowledge from her husband and practical experience in the shop. She rides and swims regularly and is uniquely at home advising women on matters of fit and function of their bicycles, training and riding.
During the last 25+ years of owning Hill Country Bicycle Works, Adam and Lisa have kept the locals and visitors alike up and riding, executing emergency repairs and long term solutions. They promote numerous events including the annual Kerrville Kids Triathlon, The Gears and Guns MTB Biathlon, The Run and Gun Summer Biathlon, the Camp Eagle Classic Mountain Bike Festival, now moved and named the Kerrville Mountain Bike Festival and the The Hügelland Holiday Marathon. They are both experienced trail builders and have planned and built numerous trails for bikes and hikers throughout the hill country. Most recently they are working on expanding the trail system at Kerrville Schreiner Park.
Lisa has served on Kerrville’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, Review Committee and Update Committee. She has also served on Kerrville’s Parks and Recreation Board for five different terms for a total of 16 years. She attends Fredericksburg’s monthly Transportation meetings and was appointed to the Fredericksburg Comprehensive Plan Update Committee. She has been the Treasurer of the Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association since 1998 and retired in 2013 as Chair of the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Committee and from the USA Cycling’s Board of Directors after serving for 12 years. She now serves on the Board of Directors for Little Bellas, mentoring girls age 8-14 on mountain bikes.
